Eton Manor Girls reach the final of the Worthing 10s!

A massive congratulations to our fantastic Eton Manor Girls for reaching the final of the Worthing 10s yesterday. Worthing 10s is the biggest girls' rugby festival in the UK, and we were up against stiff competition in the U13 pool we were drawn in. We played Ashford first - our old rivals - who were playing their biggest players to full effect. We went 2-0 down after a few passing mistakes but the try scored by Katie Lonergan was a beautiful team effort showing Ashford had much to fear. And so it proved later in the day...Next up were Harpenden, and our fearless newcomer Julia had a fantastically determined try disallowed, meaning we drew 0-0 at full time. Uckfield were our final match in the pool stage, and its fair to say we played our shirts off to win 6-2, with memorable tries from Katie L, great newcomer Katie Clarke making her rugby match debut, Ella, Peggy ,Julia and the fastest little Irish legs in East London Nansai Mooney.
We were stunned to learn that with that score line we had earned ourselves a play in the CUP SEMI-FINAL! The girls were ecstatic. Then we found out who we were playing. Ashford. Bring it on! In our first ever game against them at the beginning of the season they thrashed us 11-0. The last time we met it was down to 4-1. Our pool stage match with them got us closer at 2-1. We really wanted to beat them, and many of us felt that this was our final...By the time the match started we had worked out how to close down their lone wolf, who got so fed up with being stopped she got subbed off. I can't even remember who scored when or how as the touchline was a blur of screaming parents and team mates willing them on. Tries were matched up to 2-2, when unbelievably we went ahead. We finished either 4 or 5 -2 and we went nuts. We were in the final, after one season as a team. The final itself was against home team Worthing, who played brilliantly and beat us a very convincing 5-0. We didn't mind too much as they were very gracious hosts and we had far exceeded our expectations for the day.
Many thanks to all the parents, to Ian Welch our brilliant coach, to Kieran Conole (Wandstead - boo!) and Tony Osborne for keeping the girls motivated throughout the day, and most of all the the girls. They did Eton Manor proud. Watch out next season. We're coming back.
