Maldon 2XV 14 - Manor 23

It was cold and boggy at Maldon and we only had everyone there 10 minutes before kick off. Once we kicked off if looked like we were still in the changing room going 14 nil down in the first ten minutes. We then spent the next 20 minutes arguing amongst ourselves and with the referee, camped in our own half without the ball. Then we went down to 14 men – those of you who weren’t there can you guess who got the yellow card?

It was suggested Frosty could write this match report as he spent as much time on the side of the pitch watching the game as he spent on the pitch. A yellow card in the second half ostensibly for trying to remove their number 8 from the middle of maul by grabbing him round the neck, I think it was for giving a running commentary on the refs performance, and believe me Frosty was not a fan of the ref. The guy, still with his head was carded as well so we were level in numbers but our biggest attacking weapon up front, the scrum, was gone as we had no prop replacement

Anyhow we got ourselves together and got an unconverted try on the board before half time scored (as usual) by Mad Sean. We took a collective deep breath at half time and started the 2nd half how we should have started the first. All game we dominated them at the scrum but Maldon, as we saw at the New Wilderness at the beginning of the season, have a good pack and the big set of backs who like to run at you. In the 2nd half we just kept hold of the ball but could not get it over the line, dropped balls, wrong options and good defence from Maldon meant we were half way through the second half before we got our next score from a well worked driving maul, Frosty, (I think) falling over line. Jeff converted it but we still 2 points down – although we thought we were level at 12 all as we didn’t realise the ref had given them the first conversion.

We spent another 10 minutes pounding away getting multiple penalties 2 of which Jeff kicked putting us into the lead and a final few minutes of heart racing pressure from Maldon ended with Private America half intercepting the ball, Mad scooping it up and running the 22 and touching down in the corner. Jeff missed the conversion and it was over- a very satisfying win. Mad got Man of the Match but had rushed off because he was working so the runner up got the pint of cider, now sit down - it was Private America!! With a total of 3 votes! Much to his disgust Saunders got the Makowski Moment more actually for a series of up high, low down, barnes wallis style passes. He spent the evening trying to establish who were the fucking c**** who voted for him, claiming that your skipper had fixed the vote.
