This Sunday saw, yet another clash between Eton Manor U13s and Southend. This time was the Quarter Final of the Essex Youth Cup. A little spice was added, as Essex County selectors were present assessing both teams for potential places in the County's School of Rugby.
Unfortunately, Eton Manor were very slow into their stride and so Southend seized the initiative and went in front with two quick score, one of which was converted. 0:12. The team then seemed to wake up and there followed a period of sustained pressure where the ball was held up over the line by Southend and we were unable to ground the ball yet again. A number of close charges at the line were repulsed by a strong, well-organized Southend defence. Southend always looked dangerous on the counter but the half finshed with no further scores.
The second half saw further pressure by Eton Manor and more try scoring chances missed. Then with ten minutes to go Bryan Okoyo finally got the ball and the room to work with it and ran in a great score, converted by Bradley. 7:12.
From the kick off hopes were high that Eton Manor could make a super comeback, only to be dashed by yet another last minute try. That familiar sinking felling for the boys again. Positives to be taken are that everyone gave their all and should be as proud of themselves as wer are.
Final score, Eton Manor 7:17 Southend
