The first contact game for the U9s

This was it. The first contact game for the U9s against Finchley and London Scottish (after Burnham helpfully cried off). We took 13 players and split the squad into two teams; Archie's and Jack's team.

Archie's team was on first against a very organised Finchley. Despite some strong tackling, we were too bunched up to make any dents in their defence, and we were well behind at half time. After a quick chat about position play, we came out in the second half like a completely new team. We spread ourselves across the pitch and put together some great passes and kept up the tackling. I lost count of the score, but we came back very strongly and won the second half.

The second game was very similar to the first. Jack's team was up against a big and organised London Scottish side who used their strong runners to run in some good individual tries. We fought back with some great passing and heroic tackling, but we were too crowded around the tackle area. Again in the second half something clicked and we then saw some of the best rugby I've seen our team play. We pounced on their mistakes and made our way up field with some lovely passing and support play. We out scored them in the second half and just lost the game by one try.

Archie's team played Finchley again and Jack's team played London Scottish once more, but by this time we had really got our act together and we won both those games. What really impressed us (and the opposition coaches, as they said to us after the games) was our passing and support and how few mistakes we made - no forward passes, knock-ons or high tackles. Most of all we also showed some real guts to fight our way back from behind.

We had planned to award a player of the match but we couldn't single anybody out, because it was a real collective team effort.

Thanks for to all the supporters who cheered us on, and well done to all the players who made some nervous coaches very proud.
