Eton Manor RFC Club History 3 of 3

3. Fred Spencer

Fred joined the Eton Manor Clubs the First day the Riseholme Street Club house was reopened-post war. January 1945 aged 14.

Played Junior A goalkeeper for two seasons prior to joining the rugby section in 1947, its first full post war season and played regularly for the team for many following years.

With other boys' club members - school boy friends-the club began to create a Boys' Club team- the "Colts"- that played Coopers Company School one Sunday every four weeks. At the Boys Club 1947 AGM Fred's proposal that rugby should become an official club activity was accepted.

Note-The club youth is possibly the oldest pure Boys Club- non schools associated in England. On enquiring of the RFU some many years ago they had no other references.

Fred was Club fixture secretary for some five or more years well before the formation ofleagues and First team captain for a couple of years in the early 60's.

In 1966, having suffered a back injury whilst captain of the club 2nd team, he started to regularly referee the club lower teams. At that time we were regularly fielding three teams.

At the time of the Closure of the Eton Manor Clubs, in 1967, Fred was Rugby Club Secretary and negotiated with the Waltham Forest Council for two pitches sited immediately behind the Town Hall- where we played for some four or so years prior to moving to pitches on Hackney Marshes and the move back to the "Wilderness" to play once again on our original pitches. He was also involved with the development of the Association Sidmouth Road Clubhouse which some few years latter came under the control of the Rugby Club until the early 1990's when the local Council refused to renew the contract.

In 1975 he was invited to be a member of the County newly formed Youth committee in which the first season included some 5 or 6 club members. If he is at the lunch - Paul Saunders became the County Captain.

During his time with the County, he was involved with the development of the County Ul Ts and at the time the U21 one day tournaments.

In 1982 he became the County Secretary and four years later to become County President - 1986-88, following which for several years he was still deeply involved in the County Youth development. During this time so to get better known on the

County Senior Clubs circuit he joined the Referees Society, which sometime later he became their video man filming promising referees. Although involved with these other activities he was still a regular member at the club.

Since the Club moved to the New Wilderness in 1997 he has always been around including the summer months with the club as his local happy to enjoy watching the club teams whilst both training and playing.

Fred sadly passed away on the 31st January 2024
